Knee pain

The knee hurts. The problem usually starts somewhere else.

Unless it came from a fall, a hit, or a twist, we find that most knee pain builds over years of poor movement and overuse that force the knee to move in ways it was never designed to move. We correct the hip, ankle, foot, and pelvis mechanics that are overloading it, including lingering pain after a total knee replacement. Facing or recovering from knee surgery? Meet our Pain Free Total Knee Paradigm below.

What you feel

The symptoms

  • Pain with stairs, squatting, or kneeling
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding
  • Pain that comes and goes, until it doesn't
  • Swelling or stiffness after activity
  • Still hurting after a knee replacement or prior PT
What’s usually driving it

The hidden causes

  • Stiff or weak hip
  • Restricted ankle
  • Collapsing foot arch
  • Poor pelvis and low-back control
  • Repetitive movement habits that overload the joint
How we treat it

Our plan

  • Whole-chain assessment from the low back to the foot
  • Hands-on correction of restrictions above and below the knee
  • Hip and foot control training
  • Load and activity plan that lets the knee calm down
  • Return to the stairs, sports, and walks you love
  • A home program and tune-up plan to keep the gains you've made

The principleTreat only the knee and the pain often comes back. Correct what's driving it, and the knee finally has a chance to recover.

The chain

Above and below knee pain.

Your body moves as one connected chain, from the ankle and foot to the cervical spine. Red marks the link that usually ends up working too hard; blue marks the links we most often find stiff.

The Pain Free Total Knee Paradigm.

A new knee is only as good as the body it has to work with. Surgery replaces the joint, but it doesn't fix the stiff hip, the restricted ankle and foot, or the pelvis and spine mechanics that wore the old knee out. Refined over more than three decades, this paradigm corrects what's above and below your knee.

Before surgery

Preparing for a replacement

We correct the mechanics around your knee so you go into surgery moving better and come out ready to recover.

After surgery

Still hurting

Months or even years after your replacement, and still stiff, sore, or limping. We find and correct what standard rehab missed.

Arthritis

Not ready for surgery

Your knee is wearing down, but you're not ready for a replacement. We take pressure off the joint so you can keep moving.

  • No aggressive, painful stretchingProgress comes from correcting what's restricted, not forcing the knee to bend.
  • Hands-on release of soft tissue and scar tissueFreeing the restrictions that keep a knee stiff and sore.
  • Joint mobility restored above and belowAt the knee, hip, pelvis, spine, ankle, and foot.
  • Posture and symmetry, side to sideSo both legs share the load the way they were designed to.
  • The “whys,” found and correctedWe show you the movement problems that stressed your knee, then we correct them.
  • A plan to protect your knee for yearsA personalized home program and tune-ups to keep your gains.

“They showed me the ‘whys.’ I could actually feel the ‘whys.’ And then we went to work correcting them.”

The program name describes our goal for every patient; it is not a guarantee. Individual results vary.

See a doctor first if you have:

  • You can't put weight on the leg
  • The knee is locked and won't straighten
  • Obvious deformity after an injury
  • A hot, red, swollen knee with fever
  • Calf pain, swelling, or warmth (possible blood clot)

What is the Pain Free Total Knee Paradigm?

It's our signature approach for people preparing for a total knee replacement, still hurting after one, or living with knee arthritis that isn't ready for surgery. Instead of forcing the knee with painful stretching, we release restricted soft tissue and scar tissue, restore joint mobility, and correct the hip, pelvis, spine, ankle, and foot mechanics that put stress on the knee in the first place.

I already finished PT after my knee replacement. Can you still help?

Often, yes. Lingering pain, stiffness, or limping after a replacement is commonly driven by mechanics in the hip, ankle, foot, and pelvis that standard rehab didn't address.

Why does my knee click?

Clicks and pops are often early warning signs that the knee is moving in ways it shouldn't. They're worth checking before they turn into pain.

Will I need to keep coming back?

Not forever. Once the chain is corrected and your body knows what normal feels like, most people simply come in for occasional check-ups and tune-ups to catch small problems early.
